We became a Specialist Status Humanities College in 2006 with English as our lead subject along with Geography and History.

Speaker From UgandaSelecting English as our lead specialist subject has allowed us to build on literacy and communication skills at all levels – both within the school and community. Theatre visits take place frequently for students of all ages, and our creative writers workclosely with the Arvon Foundation to develop their skills. The English department work closely with the library, and writers’ visits and workshops are an integral part of our specialism.

History and Geography work to extend the boundaries of both subjects both in school and in the community. We run a Humanities course in year 7, which allows cross curricular teaching and visits to take place where necessary. Visiting speakers from as far as Uganda now form part of our curriculum, and students can forge links with their counterparts in very different parts of the world.

Specialist status has allowed us to take students on many more visits – both local and national, which allows a “hands on” approach to these subjects. Examples include local River Gipping trips and Town Trails, London visits, and Belgium battlefields trips in History.

Children trying "space food"Community involvement lies at the heart of our Humanities specialist status. The community is now involved in the school magazine and we have regular events including cooking with your child and gardening events.

If you wish to be involved in any of our community events please contact the school.
