Chantry High School

Embedded Firefighter

Hi,

My name is Tom Sawyer and I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Embedded Firefighter at Chantry High School.  I am returning to this school after twenty-nine years since leaving as an ex-pupil in 1980, and I am surprised to find the buildings still the same, but thankfully not the teachers!  I will be attending the school around one day a week working with staff and pupils covering subjects such as PSHE, core subjects and a variety of Fire Service themed activities.  I will also be assisting in the Learning Curve and WizeUp.

I have worked as a firefighter for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service for twenty-six years and am heavily involved with ‘Learn to Live’, a road safety initiative developed and delivered by operational firefighters.  We visit schools and colleges around Suffolk, talking about the dangers of irresponsible vehicle use and the devastating consequences that accompany it.

I look forward to meeting and working together with you all at the school in the year ahead.

Dear Tommy,

I am writing to you just to say thank you for letting me and the rest of my learning family come and look around the fire station.  I really enjoyed it, I still can’t believe I went 30 metres in the air with you and Anton, that was really high, you could see Northgate High School from there and that’s right near the hospital which is quite far away.  When we got to the top the cage wobbled a bit like a roller coaster and I thought I was going to drop down really fast but in the end it didn’t thank goodness.  I also enjoyed learning about the clothes you wear to go into somewhere where the fire is and all about the fire engines and what’s in them and where they are in the fire engine.  I also liked giving the cars a wash with the fire hoses and I hope the car owners are gonna pay us for that, only kidding t was a free car wash!  I think the fire engines and fire station is awesome.  You are a hero because you save people from the fires who need the help.  I also think people should be punished for prank calling you and the people in the fire station because other people could really need your help and they are wasting your time.  I really, really want to come again as it was fun and I so want to go on the turning table ladder as it was so much fun.  It was scary at first but lots of fun, it was so worth the trip and time.  Plus it was so much more fun than R.E., which would have been the lesson I would have had.  Lastly I just want to say a big thank you from me and another big thank you on behalf of my learning family.

Yours sincerely,

Amy  and Sophie
